Hairy Bikers Onion Bhaji Recipe

Hairy Bikers Onion Bhaji

Onion bhaji is a traditional Indian snack made by mixing onions with spiced batter and deep-frying until crispy. The Hairy Bikers’ version stays true to its roots, creating a deliciously crunchy and savory dish that’s great for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 150g chickpea flour (gram flour)
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp ground coriander
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder (optional)
  • 1 green chili, finely chopped (optional)
  • 2 tbsp fresh coriander, chopped
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 100ml water, or as needed
  • Salt, to taste
  • Vegetable oil, for deep-frying

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Batter: In a large mixing bowl, combine the chickpea flour, cumin seeds, ground coriander, turmeric powder, chili powder, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add water while whisking until you have a thick, smooth batter.
  2. Add the Onions: Stir in the sliced onions, green chili, and fresh coriander. Mix until the onions are well coated with the batter.
  3. Heat the Oil: In a deep frying pan or wok, heat enough vegetable oil to submerge the bhajis. The oil is ready when a small drop of batter sizzles and rises to the surface.
  4. Fry the Bhajis: Using a spoon, drop small portions of the batter-coated onions into the hot oil. Fry in batches for 3-4 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and crispy. Avoid overcrowding the pan.
  5. Drain and Serve: Remove the bhajis with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Serve hot with mint chutney, tamarind sauce, or yogurt dip.
