Mary Berry’s Chocolate Orange Muffins are light and fluffy chocolate muffins infused with fresh orange zest and juice for a citrusy twist. They are quick and easy to make, requiring only a few simple ingredients, and are topped with optional chocolate glaze or orange drizzle for extra indulgence.

For the Muffins:

  • 200g self-raising flour
  • 50g cocoa powder
  • 150g caster sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 100g butter (melted)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 150ml whole milk
  • Zest of 1 large orange
  • Juice of 1 orange (approx. 50ml)
  • 100g chocolate chips (dark or milk)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the Chocolate Orange Drizzle (Optional):

  • 100g dark chocolate (melted)
  • 1 tbsp orange juice
  • Zest of ½ orange

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 180°C (160°C fan) or 350°F.
  • Line a 12-hole muffin tin with muffin cases.

Step 2: Mix the Dry Ingredients

  • In a large bowl, sift together the self-raising flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and caster sugar.

Step 3: Combine the Wet Ingredients

  • In a separate bowl, whisk the melted butter, eggs, milk, orange zest, orange juice, and vanilla extract until well combined.

Step 4: Mix the Batter

  • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and gently fold with a spatula until just combined.
  • Stir in the chocolate chips, being careful not to overmix.

Step 5: Fill the Muffin Cases

  • Divide the batter evenly among the muffin cases, filling each about ¾ full.

Step 6: Bake the Muffins

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.

Step 7: Prepare the Chocolate Orange Drizzle (Optional)

  • Melt the dark chocolate and stir in 1 tbsp orange juice and orange zest.
  • Once the muffins have cooled, drizzle the chocolate mixture over the tops for extra indulgence.

Step 8: Cool and Serve

  • Allow the muffins to cool on a wire rack before serving.
  • Enjoy warm or at room temperature with a cup of tea or coffee.
